New! From Frumi Cohen Musicals

Persephone
and the Fate of Spring

Hot off the ink jet: Persephone, and the Fate of Spring. My latest musical is based on the famous Greek myth about why we have Winter, but with some BIG differences. First, it is a musical. Second, Persephone, a restless teen, picks the narcissus voluntarily [or so it seems] and travels with Hades to the Underworld. Hades plans to make her his queen, but in the musical Persephone has a mind of her own.

PERSEPHONE: I was just curious. I didn't know I'd end of as Queen of the freaking dead!

Much to her mother Demeter's dismay, Persephone falls in love with the Underworld king. The music is rock, the gods are threatened by impending veganism and Zeus is, impulsive, bossy, and not the brightest bulb in the lava lamp.

DEMETER: Zeus doesn’t think. He acts on impulse and then blames the consequences on everyone else. That's what leaders do.

Hades sings of his love for Persephone:

Sparks of light dance off and trail her
How can I compare?
I am night- as dark as failure
Who am I to dare?

Persephone on the edge of self-discovery:

Why do my friends seem so shallow?
Why does the day seem so long?
Why do I lie awake staring?
Why don’t I want to belong?

Waiting, holding
It’s coming true
Here unfolding
It’s scary what I want to do

Demeter, as she begins to kill the earth:

I'm a force of nature at the ready
Throw my anger like a machete
Here a tornado, there a tsunami
And I won't answer when you call for mommy
